The theme “Fueling the Future” communicates the important future role of natural gas as a critical source of energy that is clean, abundant, economical and sustainable.
To promote the development of natural gas as a critical element of the world’s energy future and differentiate it from other fossil fuels, the IGU USA Presidency willl focus on the following areas of strategic importance. These have been identified as a basis for the IGU study programs during the USA triennium, and will form the basis for discussions under the main conference:
Fueling the Future
- Access: aiding the industry’s access to natural gas resources
- Markets: advocating for new market opportunities
- Social License: supporting the social license to operate
Overview
Taking a holistic approach to the Presidency and the World Gas Conference, the USA triennium is focused on:
- Positioning IGU as the authoritative global voice of gas (THE Global Voice of Gas) and thus helping to protect and grow the gas markets across the globe, under the theme of Fueling the Future
- Recognizing the traditional role of the as providing networking opportunities for its members, providing even greater value to the full record setting level of membership
- Putting on one of the largest World Gas Conferences to date, in June 2018, to recognize IGU as the authoritative global voice of gas, to reach out to the largest network of gas industry executives gathered in one place at one time, and to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the American Gas Association
- It is the first time since 1988 that the United States has held the Presidency of the IGU. Given the leading role that natural gas is playing in the USA to meet energy needs, the USA is perfectly positioned to work with IGU members to promote the role of gas on the international stage
- During the USA triennium, IGU leaders will focus on educating policy makers on the importance of gas in an increasingly carbon constrained environment. The USA team intends to advocate on behalf of the global gas industry and support IGU members’ advocacy efforts. Engaging outreach campaigns will promote gas use around the world, further strengthening the IGU’s position as the Global Voice of Gas
- Areas of strategic importance to IGU members include expanded access to gas via development of new supplies and building out infrastructure to get these supplies to market; increasing market opportunities by encouraging demand growth through new applications and removing barriers to growth; and addressing social license concerns such as safety and reliability, environmental impact, energy efficiency, and community engagement. Our team will work with the broad IGU membership to develop tools and tactics to address these important issues
- IGU is known for its prestigious gas conferences and events, and a recently conducted survey indicated that information sharing and networking are some of the most valued aspects of membership. The USA team plans on hosting an exceptional 27th WGC in 2018 in Washington, D.C., coinciding with the 100-year anniversary of the AGA. This will be a prime location to bring together the world’s energy leaders to celebrate a key milestone in the history of natural gas and highlight its benefits as the foundation of an affordable and lower-carbon energy supply
- The USA team is highly motivated to serve you and prepared to hit the ground running. We’re excited about furthering the mission of the IGU and look forward to growing its global relevance and impact. We’re eager to create a more prominent role for natural gas as a long-term sustainable resource for the future of humanity and our planet.
